To maintain a process parameter at a desired level, engineers often use the PID mechanism in feedback control loops.

Note that: I’ve deleted the Automóvel-generated TIM2 initialization function and its parameter. Since our DC Motor library will handle that, we don’t need that function at all.

As an alternative to 120-degree conducting control, we can use sinusoidal control to achieve smoother and quieter operation. With 120-degree conducting control, the motor is controlled by continually cycling through six fixed resultant fluxes.

So I’ve decided to use that function instead to keep the code more generic across all STM32 microcontrollers. Without having to figure out a way to find out which pin belongs to which timer’s channel and all that stuff.

In this article we explain how to do PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) control using arduino. If you are new to electronics, we have a detailed article explaining pulse width modulation.

By closing high-side and low-side switches in a diagonal pattern, the motor rotates in one direction. The rotational direction will change as soon as these switches are open and the opposite switches are closed.

BDC motors may have a very simple design and are easy to control (some of them may not even need a controller). This is a cost-effective solution that can perfectly fit low voltage devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, including robotics and consumer electronics.

Hey, I’ve updated the article and include a link to the EasyEDA project file. Please check the section of the PCB design above and you will find it.

In a BDC motor controller, the speed and torque are regulated by changing the power supply with the help of voltage regulators. They can be either a separate system or a part of the controller. For different purposes, engineers can use linear or switching regulators.

Rotation is maintained by continually switching the flux so that the permanent magnet is constantly chasing the rotating magnetic field induced by the coils.

A brushless DC motor controller uses sensors to specify the rotor’s position. It switches the current in the windings with the help of transistors. In our article dedicated to a BLDC motor controller, we provide a detailed description of its working principles and design features.

Now look at Mode 4. Here we have current moving from W to V; this is the just the reverse of Mode 1. With a brushed DC motor, this type of current reversal would be achieved using brushes and commutator.

By carefully adjusting the current flow into each of the three phases, then, we can achieve a more continuous change in resultant flux, resulting in smoother motor rotation.
